How to Read the Course Listings


Each listing in the GUIDE includes:

Abbreviated Course Name & Gen Ed Designation: i.e., Arts 1(GA)
Course Title & Credits: i.e., The Visual Arts and The Studio
Credits: Credit value for the Course
Prereq: Course or course that must be completed as a condition for enrolling in that course; in addtition, semester standing or GPA may constitute a prerequisite for certain classes.
Instr. Recom.: Suggestions, cautions, conditions, beyond the official prerequisite.
Enrollment: Number of spaces available/section
Theme: A brief description of the course and its content
Format: i.e., Lecture, demonstration, lab, etc.
Weekly Assignments: A general idea of out-of-class work required i.e. reading 3 chapters, journal, etc.
Quizes, Exams, Papers: Number per semester.
Determination of Final Grade: Criteria for grading i.e. exams, papers, quizes, class participation, etc.

If no faculty description of the course is available, the "cataloge description" alone is printed.

A "W" suffix after a course (AM ST 100W) indicated a writing intensive course. An "H" suffix after a course (GEOG 20H) indicates an Honors course available only to students in the Campus Honors or University Scholors Programs.
