Bachelor of Science in Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology

Preparing You for the Future
York County and surrounding areas have deep-rooted traditions in engineering and manufacturing industries. Recent U.S. Census statistics account for more than 1,600 manufacturing firms in York and Lancaster counties alone, with more than 106,000 employees. While these industries represent local opportunities, they're a good indicator of the industry in general. The bottom line is that industry needs engineering graduates with electrical and mechanical backgrounds. Penn State York's Bachelor of Science degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology gives students the educational foundation to be viable solutions to industry needs for both today and tomorrow.

The B.S. EMET is a unique degree program. It is the only one of its kind in the state and one of only a few similar programs nationwide. Currently, the baccalaureate degree is offered at Penn State York and at three other Penn State campuses. It features a "hands-on", or applied, interest in both electrical and mechanical areas, especially the interface between the two. Small and mid-sized manufacturing industries have confirmed the need for individuals who are cross-trained in both disciplines. This degree is new at York, but there's nothing new about Penn State York's niche in local industry. For more than half a century, Penn State York has maintained a strong partnership with the industrial community of south central Pennsylvania. The B.S. EMET program fills a need, which has been recognized for a number of years. Graduates of this program from other campuses have already established a track record of being sought out by employers.

Program Highlights
The B.S. EMET provides the undergraduate education required for a profession as an electro-mechanical engineering technologist. The program is organized as a 2+2 program, meaning that students will first complete a two-year electrical or mechanical engineering technology degree, including engineering calculus, either from Penn State or another institution offering an accredited* program.

The program emphasizes a breadth of knowledge in all fields of engineering technology related to typical manufacturing, production and assembly plant processes. Upon completion of the degree, students will have acquired a basic knowledge in the technology relating to operation and control of manufacturing and production processes, including:

The course in electro-mechanical project design, normally taken in the last semester, provides the opportunity to apply many of the diverse skills previously learned toward a single goal. Classes are offered on a full- or part-time basis, with day and evening courses available.

Career Opportunities
Academically, graduates of this program are referred to as technologists, though they usually will be employed as engineers. Upon completing the degree, graduates will be particularly suited for careers in medium and small manufacturing firms or other industries where a knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering concepts and applications is valued. This program tends to create generalists rather than specialists, though limited opportunities to specialize may exist.

Possible career paths for the B.S. EMET include these:

Who Should Enroll?
If you enjoy working with equipment or processes having both electrical and mechanical components, learning how things work, and having hands-on experience in a lab setting, this program is for you. The B.S. EMET program can be your goal whether you're a recent high school graduate, an adult starting college for the first time or an adult returning to school. If enrolling as a first-year student, you may begin either the electrical or mechanical engineering technology associate degree program, then transition into the baccalaureate degree beginning with the fifth semester. Students who already have associate degrees from accredited* electrical or mechanical engineering technology programs are also welcome to apply. Students seeking admission from other engineering technology programs will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Financial Aid
Four types of student financial aid are available: grants, scholarships, loans and work-study employment. At Penn State York, 77 percent of eligible students receive some type of financial aid. More than 120 scholarships are awarded locally. For more information on student aid, please contact Penn State York's Office of Student Affairs at (717) 771-4045 or see other information below.

Program Requirements
A minimum of 130 credits is required to complete the B.S. EMET degree. Baccalaureate degree candidates must have 67 credits from an accredited* associate degree program, which must have included

The remaining 64 credits will be acquired in semesters five through eight. Fifth and sixth semesters vary acccording to the associate degree with which students enter.

All students take the following courses:

Students entering with an EET degree also take mechanically-oriented courses, such as CAD, mechanics, production design and product design.

Students entering with an MET degree also take electrically-oriented courses, such as digital electronics, discrete electronics and electrical machines.
