Campus Expansion Plans - New Facilities and Renovations

$11.9 Million Library and Performing Arts Center

A ceremonial groundbreaking for an $11.9 million Penn State York building was held on Thursday, December 4, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. at the campus. The new building will feature a new library and performing arts center. The building is being constructed with state funding through the Department of General Services in Harrisburg and will be sited just to the west of the Main Classroom Building at the top of the hill. Murphy and Dittenhafer of York is the design professional for the project.

The library portion of the facility will be two separate levels, and will include spaces such as group study rooms, more than ample stack space, instructional space, and special collections rooms, and will feature a view of York to the north.

The auditorium will have seating for 1,000 and will offer full theater capabilities. Students, faculty, staff, visitors, and guests will enjoy the intimacy of a smaller theater, with the seating capacity of a larger venue because of the balcony that will be part of the architectural design. This section of the building will also house art classroom space and will offer programming flexibility not currently available on campus.

These two major areas of the building will be connected with a connecting/lobby space designed to be open to floors above/below. There will be ample use of glass to take advantage of natural light and the vistas to the north. A coffee bar will be located in this area as well.

The building is scheduled for completion in 2005 and will be an exciting addition for the campus and community to use and enjoy for years to come.

1118 South Albemarle - The Bradley Building

Members of the campus community have certainly noticed the new sidewalk just outside the Main Classroom Building that now connects a brick ranch home on Albemarle Street to the campus. This home, owned by the University, was recently approved by Spring Garden Township to be used as continuing education offices. Thanks to the kind donation of Mr. Harvey Bradley, the new office area is complete.

Boundary Avenue - The Loretta Claiborne Building

Penn State York is a proud resident in York's new Loretta Claiborne Building. The campus has one classroom in this building that is primarily used for continuing education classes, and outside group usage. The building is located just to the south of the Susan Byrnes Health Center at the intersection of Boundary Avenue and S. George Street.

Classrooms on Campus

Classrooms are located primarily in the Main Classroom Building, and also in the Information Sciences and Technology Building. Physical Education classes are located in the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center.

Athletic Fields

Penn State York maintains six tennis courts, two of which are lit for evening use. These courts are open to the public, whenever classes or Penn State teams are not using them.

The campus also has an NCAA soccer field located just to the west of the tennis courts and the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center. Bleachers are available for limited seating at the soccer field, but guests may want to bring their own chairs to view events.

The campus also has two other all-purpose fields that may be used by the public when they are not being used for campus/University business.

Anyone wishing to reserve a field for use, should contact the Penn State York Athletic Director Kerry Magni for details.

The Penn State Woods

Located on the south side of campus, the Penn State Woods offers visitors a pleasant wooded area filled with walking trails, quiet seating areas and an outdoor amphitheater. When weather permits, outdoor campus activities and programs such as convocation and public concerts are held here.
