Penn State York Sports Teams are Strong Heading to Tournaments
Penn State York Team Tennis
"Join the Tradition"
By Head Coach Mike Arnold
The winning tradition of Penn State York Team Tennis was decisively carried on in a memorable and record-setting 2008-09 season.
Our team tennis squad won the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) with a 13-1 record (a team tennis record) and finished as runner-up in the season-concluding PSUAC tournament held at beautiful Sarni Tennis Center in University Park, PA. This was possibly the best season ever for Penn State York team tennis.
Team chemistry and camaraderie were a big part of our success this past season. Out of this framework came some noteworthy individual distinctions:
Team captain Matt Holdorf, sophomore (York Catholic High School) had a 9-0 season at men's # 3 singles and teamed with Chris Bonham, sophomore, (Coatesville) to go undefeated at men's # 2 doubles. Bonham also went undefeated in part-time play at men's # 2 singles.
Connor Slates, freshman, (Dallastown High School) was an outstanding first year player, going 6-1 at men's # 2 singles, and teaming with fellow Dallastown alum Jon Pettit, sophomore, to achieve a perfect record at men's # 1 doubles, with crucial conference wins versus Penn College and Penn State Abington. Holdorf and Bonham did not lose all season at men's # 2 doubles.
Matt Holdorf won two events, the only Penn State York team member to do so, in the PSUAC Tournament at State College. He won in the men's # 3 singles and the men's # 2 doubles.
Kayla Cyr, sophomore, (Winters Mill High School.) had a solid year, winning eight of twelve matches in the conference. Chris Solloway, sophomore, (York Catholic) returned to York from the University Park campus and showed great promise with a 5-0 singles record at men's 3 and 4.
Clint Kohler, senior, (New Orleans, LA) ended his career at Penn State York by compiling a 10-1 record at men's # 4 singles.
Freshman Jon Heird ( Dallastown High), younger brother of Division I NCAA standout Billy Heird, and Bryce Rankin (West York High School) demonstrated their potential by winning the # 5 and # 6 singles events at University Park.
Last but not least, Steph Childress, freshman, (Dallastown High School) went 10-2 at women's # 2 singles en route to achieving a second seed at the University Park tournament.
Already looking toward the 2009-10 season, Penn State York Team Tennis hopes to attract a strong freshmen class of student-athletes to supplement a returning core in order to sustain our winning tradition. (a cumulative 53-11 record in our past six seasons)
