Penn State York Team Tennis ended the season on a high note by winning the PSUAC Conference Tournament at Sarni Tennis Center in University Park on October 20-21, 2007. York won the tournament title in most dramatic fashion, coming from behind by winning five of six doubles matches, to earn the distinctive Lion Shrine trophy. Twenty-seven of the team’s total of 63 points were achieved during the furious comeback.
Major contributors during the tournament included:
- Jon Pettit (Dallastown) won men’s #1 doubles and was runner-up at men’s #1 singles; regular season record 7-2 at #1 singles and 6-0 at #1 doubles.
- Matt Holdorf (York Catholic) won at #2 men’s singles and was runner-up at men’s #2 doubles; perfect regular season record of 11-0 at #2 singles and 9-0 at #2 doubles.
- Dane Kikola (team captain from Kennard Dale) was runner-up in both men’s #3 singles and men’s #2 doubles; regular season record 8-2 at #3 singles and 9-0 at #2 doubles.
- Chris Bonham (Coatsville ) winner at #1 men’s doubles and runner-up at men’s #4 singles regular season performance 10-1 at #4 and 6-0 at #1 doubles.
- Kayla Cyr (Winters Mill, MD) champion at woman’s doubles and semifinalist in women’s singles; regular season record 8-3 at women’s #1 singles and 4-0 at women’s doubles.
- Jennifer Shaw, (Spring Grove) finished her career by winning women’s doubles; regular season performance 4-1 at #2 singles and 4-0 at women’s doubles.
Penn State York was a close second (to Abington) in the conference regular season with a 9-3 record, going undefeated on its home courts. York posted its fifth consecutive winning season.
Coach Mike Arnold, entering his sixth year, is optimistic about the 2008-09 season, with the overwhelming majority of the championship team set to return and some promising newcomers expected.
