Penn State York Sports Teams are Strong Heading to Tournaments
Penn State York 2008 Volleyball Season Summary
The 2008 Penn State York Women’s Volleyball Team was very successful. They ended their regular season play with a very solid record of 12-4. Head Coach, Meggan Clancy, and Assistant Coach, Courtney Boyer, believe their team really learned to communicate and play better defense over their eight weeks of regular season competition. After regular season play, the top eight teams in the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) were selected and seated for championships, which were hosted by Penn State Fayette. Penn State York was seated fifth out of eight teams. The teams were not seated according to conference record because Penn College was seated third in the bracket. Penn State York easily defeated Penn College earlier in the season. With Penn State York seated fifth, this meant that Penn State York would play Penn State Beaver, a team that had already given them one of their only four losses in regular season play. At championships, Penn State York played a tough and hard fought match against Beaver. In the end, the team could not pull out a win. They lost, even though they played one of the best matches of their entire season. The Penn State Lady Lions ended their season with an impressive 12-5 record. This was an incredible season for the Penn State York Women’s Volleyball Team.
This team was led by some very dominant volleyball players. Team captain Lindsay Mumma, (#11), could put the ball away whenever needed. She led the team in kills with 235. She averaged 12 kills per match and was selected to the PSUAC All-Conference team for the second year in a row. Outside hitter Katie McDonald, (#7), contributed to the team’s outstanding defensive skills saving her team with 123 digs this season. Kim Knapke, (#8), was a very dominant player both in the front row and the back. She led the team in digs with 209 saves and 40 blocks. Setter Samantha Noel, (#2), knew how to run a quick offense and had a strong serving arm. She led the team in assists and service aces. She had 348 assists averaging 18 assists per match and totaled 85 service aces this season. Noel was also a PSUAC All-Conference team selection. Senior Ciara Rossum, (#1), was one of the team’s most encouraging players. Her vertical jump and quick snap made her a dominant hitter. She had 72 kills this season. Ann Shaw, (#9), was another outside hitter who really developed her play at this position and could be called upon to go into action at any point in the match. Abbey Sabbold, (#10), and Erin Murphy,(#5), were the team’s defensive specialists. Together, they combined for 169 saves. Rachael Alfano, (#12), was a very encouraging player who the coaches named as the most improved player this season. Ashley Stacharowski, (#4 or #6), was a player with a lot of heart and determination to learn the game of volleyball. These two players rounded out the 2008 Penn State York Women’s Volleyball team’s success.
