Penn State York Sports Teams are Strong Heading to Tournaments
The Penn State York Women's volleyball team had many season highlights both on and off the court. The Team achieved a winning record of 9-7, clinching a sixth seed spot in the playoffs. The team played their first ever "Dig Pink" match on October 13 at Mont Alto to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness. To raise money for this important event, the team held a car wash, a bake sale, and asked for donations for this great cause.
The team was very proud that together they were able to raise $1,314.85 and presented their check to the assistant athletic director at Penn State Mont Alto before their "Dig Pink" match began. Another season highlight was the team trip up to University Park on October 3 to see the Penn State women's volleyball team play Iowa. After the match was over, the team even got the chance to snap some pictures with a few of the Penn State players. The Penn State York women's volleyball season came to an abrupt end during the first round of playoffs.
The Penn State York Volleyball team was led by Middle Hitter and Co-Captain Kristin Steinnagel. She led the entire Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) in kills, blocks, and points per player. She also ranked second in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) in kills, seventh in blocks, and third in points per player. She finished the season with 174 kills, 90 digs, 23 service aces, and 63 blocks.
Another key player this season was Setter and Co-Captain Erin Murphy. She was ranked fourth in the PSUAC for assists and fourteenth in the USCAA for assists. She finished the season with 17 kills, 244 assists, 19 service aces, and 54 digs. Murphy was ranked tenth for service aces and twentieth for digs in the PSUAC. She went from playing the team's libero position her past two seasons to running the entire offense this season.
J.J. Shuman was another lady lion that made a huge contribution both on and off the court this season. Not only did she mastermind and organize raising money for the "Dig Pink" match, she also was ranked in the PSUAC in digs (fourth), kills (eighth), and points per player (twelfth). This outside hitter finished the season with 96 kills, 16 service aces, 135 digs, and 3 blocks.
Gracey Rhude was another offensive and defensive weapon for Penn State York. This middle hitter was ranked first in the PSUAC for service aces for almost the entire season. She was also ranked fifth in the USCAA for service aces. Rhude ranked high in other statistical categories in the PSUAC. She was fifteenth in kills, eighth in blocks, tenth in digs, and eleventh in points per player. Megan Warfel was another player who had a lot to add to this season's talented team. She played York’s outside hitter position and finished the season with 20 kills, 9 service aces, and 45 digs. Warfel was ranked twenty-second in the PSUAC for digs.
Sabryna Holmberg played the entire season with a major knee injury. She played the right side hitter position and finished the season with 1 kill, 9 assists, and 10 digs. She was ranked sixteenth in the PSUAC for assists.
Shaelyn Frecon and Lauren Kline rounded out this 2009 talented play list. Both of these players were key utility players who could play both the right and left side of the court. Kline finished the season with 3 kills, 4 service aces, and 4 digs. Frecon finished the season with 1 kill, 1 assist, 15 service aces, and 10 digs.
