University of Rochester Alumni Association Event Webinar

: Tuesday January 22
Time:
1:00-2:00 pm
Location: GISTC 104
Presenter:
Edward L. Deci, Professor of Psychology and Gowen Professor in the Social Sciences, University of Rochester

Most psychologists and economists have treated motivation as a single concept that varies only in amount. People are simply viewed as having more motivation or less. Self-determination theory (SDT), the path-breaking work of University of Rochester professors Edward Deci and Richard Ryan differentiates types of motivation rather than focusing only on the amount of motivation. In the broadest sense, the theory, as it has developed over the past quarter century, maintains that motivation develops from within us, grounded in our basic human needs to develop our skills and capacities, to act of our own accord, and to connect to others and to our environment-needs that are referred to as “competency, autonomy, and relatedness.” Self-determination theory holds that we are most deeply engaged, and that we do our most creative work, when we feel that we are acting according to our own will on behalf of goals we find meaningful.

The work has included laboratory experiments as well as field studies in areas of life including education, parenting, health care, organizational behavior, physical activity, virtual worlds, and primary relationships. We invite you to join Professor Deci, an internationally recognized scholar in the field of human motivation, as he discusses how applying the concepts of self-determination theory can lead to enhanced performance and psychological well-being.

Join Malcolm Brown, EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative director, and Veronica Diaz, ELI associate director, as they moderate this webinar with Larry Goldberg and Madeleine Rothberg of WGBH NCAM. The digitization of online learning and media, including electronic publishing and textbooks, has brought both great opportunities and unique challenges for colleges and universities with a mission to serve all of their students inclusively. Anywhere, anytime learning in malleable and flexible digital formats can provide students with disabilities timely and equal access as never before. However, old models of retrofitting materials no longer work and can be vastly expensive.

A new approach, building infrastructure and enhancements into content and delivery from conception, enables direct and on-demand access for all: learning materials and processes can be “born digital—and accessible.” In the past few years, more than ever before, resources and tools have become available to support this goal. Progress is evident in a variety of sectors: federally funded research and development projects, commercial enterprises large and small, cloud-based services with distributed labor, hardware and software manufacturers, and advocacy and standards organizations.

Malcolm Brown, EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative director, and Veronica Diaz, ELI associate director, will moderate this webinar with Sheryl Burgstahler. Most postsecondary faculty and administrators desire to make teaching and learning opportunities engaging for all students, but many do not feel fully prepared to ensure that their offerings are fully accessible to potential students with disabilities. This presentation will address typical disabilities of postsecondary students, challenges they encounter in accessing technology-based learning opportunities, assistive technology that provides access to technology, and universal design strategies that can be employed to make teaching and learning welcoming and accessible to all students, including those with disabilities. Practical suggestions will be offered and resources will be shared.
