Names, do you really believe that they have a real meaning or is that belief just another stupid superstition? Most times it seems like more than just a coincidence that the a person's surname and or last name also represents their level of success, of happiness, etc.
Keeping this in mind, we must ask ourselves: Does a name associate you with a particular group of people such as Hicks? When analyzing the meaning of the word "hick," one is lead to believe that a hick is a person who is informal, provincial, and unsophisticated. In most cases to sit down and picture this person would be relatively easy. You ask why? Well simply looking at the definition you would probably picture a small town American who has a garden as well as some animals. However, can you really consider this person to be a hick? Again I prompt you to explore the meaning of the word hick.
Let us explore a few names that could be associated as hick names. Byron, whose name means "from the cottage," seems to be a relatively normal name. However, let us associate this name with the word Hick. In doing so, I, like many others, have unknowingly stereotyped this individual into this social group.
What if you had a name like Butterworth? It happens to mean "butter farm." First of all you would have pancake syrup named after you. Then you would be forever doomed with the association of farm and hick life.
Another name to look at is Walcott. Being associated with the meaning of "cottage of the serfs" sort of helps you to further picture what a hick is.
These are only a handful of examples. Some names would lead you to believe that the person is a Hick. But the chances are pretty good that they are not. A hick to many people as I said before is referred to as a small town citizen that is not as sophisticated as your New Yorker. Having down some traveling myself I know that the meaning of the word hick goes much farther then what most dictionaries take it to. There are a lot of issues that surround the idea of what a hick can be classified as. However, the main point is that your name, no matter how hickish it sounds does not necessarily mean that you are a hick. For example, some of the members of my family represent meaning of the word hick itself. I'll be the first one to admit that my relatives are very unsophisticated as compared to most people. Furthermore when you get down to it there some of the most backwards pains in the asses that you could know. But guess what, their names don't even come close to what you would consider to be called hick names. So Please remember that just because your name is Bubba, you're not necessarily a hick. We know that the name does not always represent the person.
