Rhapsody referred to a medley, a hodgepodge, or a farrago of various writings cobbled together without logical connections (Rogers, 1972:246-47). Its free-wheeling, irregular form suggested improvisation, and its association with “rapture” connoted emotional intensity or an effusive outpouring of sentiment (Holman, 379-80).
