Lesson Title: Company Analysis

Library Media Skills Objectives:

Students will:

• Use the internet to locate, review and apply information concerning companies that student is considering as an employer and to whom the student may consider submitting a resume for a cooperative work experience.

Students will:

• complete a worksheet describing their company selections

Instructional Roles:

• The activity is initiated by the teacher of the vocational program in conjunction with the Media Specialist to incorporate media skills within the vocational area. This activity can be modified to meet the needs of each vocational area. It is an articulated lesson that includes the vocational area as well as the research capabilities of the media center.

• The vocational teacher will have presented the types of companies that are available in the area. The vocational teacher will then distribute the Company Analysis. Students are asked to think about the companies that are located near them and are asked to select at least two for consideration by the group and one for personal consideration. The students will form groups by community location and then work in these groups to research the information on the handout. This will allow the students to discuss the material that they are collecting and begin to think about making career decisions based upon their research.

• The vocational teacher will review the Company Analysis vehicle that each student will complete. Each category is defined and students are asked if there are questions regarding the category as it is discussed.

• The media specialist will discuss the areas of the WWW and Search Engines available to students, as well as search strategies, that are to be used in the research.

Activity and Procedure for Completion:

• Students are released into the Computer Lab to research their choices in groups. The vocational teacher and media specialist will guide and suggest. They will not direct students to choices. Students will discuss data and complete the Company Analysis using the resources listed.

These catagories are used for each of three company choices.

Evaluation:

Completeness of the worksheet will determine the grade.
