Mrs. P’s Best Search Engines
General Search Engines: These sites will give you access to “surfing the web” on a specific topic.
Google
Google is the best general search engine site I’ve visited! I find all I seem to need through Google: general visitation on the web, images, and news to name a few. It’s very easy to use too! Just type in a topic and start reading; after reading, narrow down your topic search and start to get specific with your information – you’ll get general information on a topic and specific information on the finer points of your topic!

Yahoo
Yahoo is my second favorite general search engine site. I find enough information to fill a need – not as easily or thoroughly as Google – but enough! When you visit Yahoo follow the same instructions for searching that you did using Google!

About
About is my favorite runner up (if that’s possible!). About is fun to use for “how stuff works” type of questions and “where can I go to get this” type of information! Use it the exact same way you did Google and Yahoo! Have fun!

News Search Engines: These sites will gives you access to news – all categories – at the local, state, national, and international level.
Google News
WOW! This is one awesome news site. Use it often and you’ll never be information poor or left out in the cold! Click on top stories or click on a specific category to get up-to-date information. Pictures, narrower searches, and news from other countries are also available. It’s, by far, a great site!

AltaVista News
This site offers the same type of information that Google does, except not in the same detail, presentation, or format. Google is much easier to use – but AltaVista runs a close second and the one I would choose after Google.

MSN News
This site offers the general user and reader news information at the local, state, national, and international level. Use this site if you cannot access the other two and cannot buy a newspaper for the day!

Need an Article? Find an Article!
This unique site allows the user to search millions of articles from academic, industry, and general interest publications. When you need a periodical article to use as a research tool – this is the place to go!

Meta Search Engines: These search engines simply narrow the search for you. They search the web and all of those general search engines for your information. They are a building block for the “little guys!”
Doggy Want a Bone?
Dogpile is the best in this category. Dogpile brings into play searches through Google, Yahoo, and Ask Jeeves. After you type in your request your search is narrowed down and categorized under the individual site where it was found. Cool!

Information Needed?
Info.com is an excellent Meta search engine – second to Dogpile. It brings into play fourteen general search engines and general information, news, images, and even shopping!

Kid Safe Search Engines: The following are kid safe search engines. They’re monitored and controlled so children can feel safe and be safe as they search the web for information.

This site is excellent for kids surfing the net – facts and reference, arts and literature, health and family, and entertainment information is available. “Kids” of all ages and educational levels can use this site!

Ask Jeeves
Ask Jeeves – do you kids even know who Jeeves is?! He’s a butler – a butler with all the answers! Go to this page and find massive information – a dictionary, clip art, a thesaurus, an almanac, and even homework help (to name a few!). All types of “kids” can use this site – I just bookmarked it!

Government Search Engines: These sites are available to give the user general and specific “government” information – how our country works, different agencies, and even the White House!
Searching our Government?
Searching for information from our nation’s capitol has never been so easy! Just go to this site and you’ll find everything you need – information regarding Congress, the White House, executive agencies, independent agencies, and information at the state and local level.

Sleuth is the name of this search engine and it runs a close second to searchgov.com! It’s easy to use, has access to numerous government web sites, and even connects to Yahoo!
