Course Description

This course is an introduction to source materials for storytelling, and the techniques for learning and telling tales. Techniques include the selection, adaptation, learning, and presentation of stories for all ages.

The content of this course is applicable to educators (including pre-school), librarians and media specialists, clergy, community recreation facilitators, health and senior care providers, and business managers.

The Art of Storytelling (LS 515 - 3 credits)
Course Outcomes

Class participants will:

  1. experience and discuss a variety of storytelling styles and approaches to learning stories by listening to and interviewing guests and class tellers, and via video and audio tapes.
  2. be able to trace the historical development and cultrual significance of storytelling as an instructional and educational art form and gain understanding of philosophical uses of stories in a variety of settings.
  3. be able to define and distinguish between story types, (e.g., folk tales, fables, literary, myths, etc.).
  4. be able to locate stories, to research those selected for telling, and to understand the importance of story research.
  5. develop a sensitivity to the selection and modification of stories based on audience types, (e.g., preschool children, older children, adults, multi-cultural groups, etc.).
  6. understand the principles of using props, puppets and other media techniques appropriately in storytelling presentations.
  7. understand the appropriateness of storytelling in a variety of formal and informal settings.

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend all classes, to arrive on time, and remain until class ends. Roll will be taken. Assignments are due on the dates indicated in the course calendar.
