Introduction

You are in the process of opening the salon/day spa you have always dreamed of. You have decided on the location and type of ownership. In addition, you have selected the equipment, drawn a design and made a 3-D model of the salon. For this assignment you need to develop a list of services or a "menu" of the services you plan to offer.

The Task

Think carefully about the selection of services, the certifications required to perform the service, the equipment and supplies required. Also, consider the services or the lack of services by competing salons near your location. You will be responsible to:

  • complete a layout of your supply room (dispensary)
  • develop a list of services to be offered
  • from the list of services, create a list of supplies necessary to provide the services.

You should work in the same groups of owners used for the Salon Equipment web quest (unless you received permission from the teacher). You may use local salons or salons on the Web (listed below) to locate samples of service menus. Next, to create the service menu you may choose to use Microsoft Word. Finally, you may want to use www.beautydesign.com as a resource to design the supply room or dispensary.

The Process

    1. To begin review samples of service menus by clicking on the web sites listed below.

Now that you have an idea for prices, create your price list. You may use Microsoft Word.

    2. Now that you have your price list, develop a list of the supplies needed to perform each of the services. You could use Microsoft Word. You may include graphics in your price list.

    3. Finally, you will design your supply room. Show the location of doors, shelving, sinks, washer and dryer etc. On the shelving show the location of all of your supplies from the list you developed. You may create your diagram at www.beautydesign.com/

Conclusion

We hope you found this project useful in planning the services your future salon may offer. You could use this as an entry for your School To Career Portfolio. After completion of this project you may want to continue by asking yourself/yourselves these questions: Considering the cost of the supplies, were you charging enough to make a profit? Were your prices comparable to the competition in your area? Did you have all of the necessary equipment? Finally, was the service a part of the manicuring, cosmetician, or cosmetology license and regulated by the State Board of Cosmetology or if it was not regulated did you leave space outside the required square footage of the licensed salon?
